MAJ Paul Voelke, an infantry officer, served in the Army for 14 years and deployed twice each to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division and deployed in February as the Executive Officer for the battalion. He had been awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and an Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Paul married his childhood sweetheart, Traci, and together they had two sons he adored.
