From the Heart: A Volunteer’s Survivor Week Story
From the heart of one of our incredibly dedicated board members, the following is Kaleigh Wotring’s account of her experience volunteering during Survivor Week 2026 at The Alaska Project. Accompanying images by her daughter, Hazel Wotring.
Attending survivor week was a game changer for me. Anyone with questions about the impact we make - survivor week is the answer. This is why we do what we do.
We connected with and supported 15 survivors this week.
In addition to the planned activities, participants were offered unique opportunities for one on one positive male mentorship - which some of the participants have little access to. They did scary things that they didn’t think they could. They honored their loved ones in thought, word, and deed - but they also were reminded that they don’t have to carry the burden of remembrance alone.
I am grateful to the donors who make this possible. We can do a lot with volunteer time, but we do need the money. In addition to all the things you can see on the property, it pays for flights, rental vans, food, activities, safety equipment, ATVs, gas & propane, cleaning supplies, storage for equipment, sheets, blankets, towels - and to wash them! And that’s a short list. So yes, all the asks for fundraising support are necessary to keep the program running.
I can’t put into words the respect I have for the board members who have dedicated themselves to continued service. But in particular this week, Rock, Jason, Mike, and Traci have given their heart and souls to making sure the participants have an unforgettable Alaskan experience, full of things that may seem mundane, but that really are not.
I am honored to have been able to serve these families, and my heart breaks for the loss that brings us all together.
Thank you, Kaleigh. Your constant commitment and willingness to do the work is deeply appreciated by not only the families we are so honored to serve, but by the entire organization that endeavors to help them.
